CONTROL QUESTION: How have you seen aspects of culture or unconscious bias at work in workplaces?
Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) for 2024:
By 2024, my big hairy audacious goal for bias awareness is to eradicate all forms of conscious and unconscious bias in workplaces across the world. This means creating a world where every individual is valued and respected for their unique qualities and treated fairly regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, religion, or any other characteristic.
I have personally witnessed the damaging effects of bias in the workplace. I have seen how people of color are overlooked for promotions and opportunities, how women are paid less than men for the same job, how LGBTQ+ individuals face discrimination and microaggressions, and how individuals with disabilities are often not given the same accommodations and opportunities as others.
The issue of unconscious bias is especially prevalent in workplaces, where people often make quick judgments based on stereotypes and assumptions without realizing it. This can lead to exclusion, discrimination, and limited opportunities for certain individuals, hindering diversity and inclusion efforts in organizations.
To address this, my goal is to implement comprehensive training programs and policies that promote bias awareness and educate employees on the impact of their actions and words. This includes promoting a culture of inclusivity, providing diversity and inclusion training to managers and executives, implementing anonymous reporting systems for discrimination cases, and holding all employees accountable for their words and actions.
My vision is to create a future where workplaces are truly diverse and inclusive, where individuals from all backgrounds feel welcome and valued, and where conscious and unconscious biases are actively challenged and dismantled. By 2024, I aim to see significant progress towards this goal, with workplaces becoming more equitable, inclusive, and welcoming for all individuals.
