Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) for 10 years from now:
Ten years from now, in 2031, my big hairy audacious goal for incremental adaptation is that it becomes the norm in our society to continuously and proactively make small, gradual changes to adapt to the changing climate and minimize the need for larger, more disruptive transformational changes.
I envision a world where individuals, communities, and industries are constantly assessing their practices and making small adjustments to reduce their carbon footprint and mitigate the effects of climate change. This could include implementing renewable energy sources, using sustainable transportation methods, reducing waste, and practicing responsible land use. These incremental changes, when done consistently and at scale, will add up to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and give us a fighting chance to combat the effects of climate change.
However, this is not to say that transformational change will not be required. In fact, my goal also includes a shift towards a more sustainable and regenerative economy, where the well-being of people and the planet takes priority over profit. This will involve more fundamental and systemic changes in the way we produce and consume goods and services, as well as our attitudes and values towards our relationship with the environment.
But I believe that incremental adaptation can pave the way for this larger transformation. By continuously adapting and improving our practices, we will build the resilience and capacity to make bigger and bolder changes in the future. It will also help mitigate the negative impacts of climate change, such as extreme weather events, sea level rise, and loss of biodiversity, while we work towards a more sustainable future.
To achieve this goal, it will take collective action and collaboration from all sectors of society – governments, businesses, non-profits, and individuals. We must also prioritize equitable and just solutions that take into account the needs and voices of marginalized communities who are disproportionately affected by climate change.
