CONTROL QUESTION: How do you use mindfulness, self compassion or other contemplative practices in the work?
Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) for 10 years from now:
In 2030, my big hairy audacious goal for self-compassion practice is to create a global movement that promotes the integration of mindfulness, self-compassion, and other contemplative practices in all aspects of work.
I envision workplaces where employees are encouraged to prioritize their mental health and well-being, and where self-compassion is seen as a necessary tool for success. I see a world where leaders and managers are trained in mindfulness and self-compassion practices, enabling them to lead with empathy, authenticity, and compassion.
To achieve this goal, I will collaborate with organizations, governments, and leaders to incorporate mindfulness and self-compassion training into employee development programs. I will also work towards creating policies and initiatives that promote a culture of self-compassion in the workplace, such as providing mental health days and implementing flexible work schedules.
Additionally, I will use technology to reach a broader audience and provide easily accessible resources for self-compassion practices. This could include creating a mobile app or an online platform that offers guided meditations, journaling prompts, and other tools for developing self-compassion.
Through these efforts, I hope to see a major shift in the way we approach work – one that prioritizes holistic well-being and self-compassion over productivity and profit. I believe that by making self-compassion an integral part of the work culture, we can create healthier, happier, and more compassionate individuals and communities.

Self Compassion Practice Case Study/Use Case example - How to use:
Synopsis:
The client, a large technology company, approached our consulting firm with the goal of increasing employee well-being and satisfaction in the workplace. The company had noticed that many employees were experiencing high levels of stress, burnout, and low morale. In addition, there were concerns about employee retention and productivity. After initial discussions with the client, it was determined that implementing a self-compassion practice program could be beneficial for employees and the overall organization.
Consulting Methodology:
Our consulting team first conducted a needs assessment to better understand the specific challenges faced by the client and the employees. This included conducting focus groups, surveys, and interviews with a representative sample of employees at different levels within the organization. From this assessment, we identified the main issues as work-related stress, lack of work-life balance, and a culture of self-criticism and perfectionism.
Based on our assessment, we recommended implementing a program focused on self-compassion practices. Self-compassion is defined as treating oneself with kindness and understanding instead of criticism and judgment. It involves three components: self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness (Neff, 2011). We proposed a three-part program consisting of workshops, individual coaching sessions, and ongoing support through regular mindfulness sessions.
Workshops: The workshops were designed to introduce employees to the concept of self-compassion and provide tools and techniques for incorporating it into their daily work and personal lives. The workshops were interactive and included activities such as guided meditations, writing exercises, and group discussions.
Individual Coaching Sessions: To further support employees in incorporating self-compassion into daily life, we offered one-on-one coaching sessions. These sessions were tailored to each employee′s specific needs and challenges, providing personalized support and guidance in developing self-compassion skills.
Ongoing Support: To ensure long-term success, we also recommended regular mindfulness sessions to be offered on a weekly basis. Mindfulness, defined as the non-judgmental awareness of the present moment (Kabat-Zinn, 2013), has been shown to be an effective way of cultivating self-compassion (Baer et al., 2010). These sessions provided a space for employees to continue practicing self-compassion and mindfulness in a supportive group setting.
Deliverables:
The main deliverable was the implementation of the self-compassion program, including the workshops, coaching sessions, and ongoing support. In addition, our team created a toolkit for managers and supervisors to effectively support their employees in incorporating self-compassion practices into their work. The toolkit included resources such as articles, videos, and tips for managers to create a more self-compassionate work culture.
Implementation Challenges:
One of the main challenges we faced was resistance from some employees who were initially skeptical about the effectiveness of mindfulness and self-compassion practices. To address this, we provided evidence-based research and case studies on the positive outcomes of these practices in other organizations. We also offered a pilot program for a select group of employees to try out the program before it was fully implemented.
Another challenge was finding a balance between individualized support and the capacity of the client′s internal resources. To address this, we trained internal coaches to provide ongoing support to employees after completing the program. This ensured that employees had access to ongoing support without relying too heavily on external resources.
KPIs:
We used a combination of qualitative and quantitative measures to evaluate the success of the program. Qualitative measures included employee feedback surveys and focus groups, where employees were asked about their experiences with the program and its impact on their well-being. Quantitative measures included employee engagement surveys, productivity metrics, and retention rates. We also tracked the number of employees who participated in the program and their level of engagement throughout the program.
Management Considerations:
To ensure the program′s success, it was crucial to have the support and involvement of senior management. We worked closely with the client′s leadership team to communicate the benefits of the program and gain their support. In addition, we provided training for managers and supervisors to effectively support their employees in integrating self-compassion practices into their work.
Conclusion:
The self-compassion program has been successfully implemented in the client′s organization and has had a positive impact. The feedback from employees has been overwhelmingly positive, with many reporting reduced stress and improved work-life balance. The client has also seen an increase in employee engagement and retention rates. Furthermore, the program has created a more compassionate and supportive work culture, allowing employees to feel more connected and valued within the organization. Our consulting team continues to work with the client to ensure the sustainability of the program and provide ongoing support as needed.
