What's the difference between the Lifecycle and Capability certificates?

The Lifecycle and Capability certificates comprise the two streams, or branches, of the ITIL intermediate-level qualification scheme.

The Lifecycle stream-which includes the Service Strategy qualification-consists of five modules or certifications. These certifications focus on the Service Lifecycle, the use of process and practice within the lifecycle and developing the skills needed to deliver quality Service Management practices in an organization.

The Capability certificates, which are made up of four modules, are geared toward those who want a thorough understanding of ITIL processes and roles. The primary focus is on activities, execution and use of the processes throughout the entire Service Lifecycle.


About the Examinations:

  • Evidence of ITIL v3/2011 Foundation Certificate or ITIL v2 Foundation + v3 Foundation Bridge Certificate and completion of the Service Strategy Lifecycle course from an Accredited Training Provider is required to sit the exams
  • It is recommended that students should complete at least 21 hours of personal study for each program by reviewing the eLearning pgram and the book in preparation for the examination.
  • The intermediate exams are a closed book exam with eight (8) multiple choice, scenario-based, gradient scored questions.
  • Exam duration is a maximum 90 minutes for all candidates in their respective language (candidates sitting the examination in a language other than their first language have a maximum of 120 minutes and are allowed to use a dictionary)
  • Each question will have 4 possible answer options, one of which is worth 5 marks, one which is worth 3 marks, one which is worth 1 mark, and one which is a distracter and achieves no marks.
  • Pass score is 28/40 or 70%
  • Distinction pass score is under consideration

    I used The The ITIL Foundation Complete Certification Kit is a very helpful tool for understanding and implementing the ITIL practices into your IT Organization. I as a Help Desk Manager found the material to be very helpful with my daily job functions. So if your looking to become ITIL Certified then I highly recommend this guide as one of the main study guides. of Service have put together a useful bundle of fairly easy to follow study guide and digestible eLearning material - there's nothing ground breaking about the package but it's straight forward and good enough for the foundation material. As this material is about service it was nice to see that Art of Service team were extremely helpful and responsive to my queries/support requests. Art of Service's Foundation certification kit goes right to the heart of ITIL Foundations; a straightforward roadmap through the service lifecycle it not only provided complete preparation for and gave me confidence going into the exam but the multimedia companion material led by ITIL practitioners served as an excellent supplement to the guide. I have recommended this kit to partner companies for the certification needs of their employees and am regularly asked to borrow my guide as a reference. A++++ recommend this product. I like the combination of guide and online presentations. While at first I was a little surprised by how thin the guide was I'm very satisfied with the depth and breadth of content. I'm still reading the guide but so far I am retaining the information very well. This is partly because I'm reading the text first then following up with the online presentations. I like the section review questions. I haven't tried the test prep stuff yet but I'm confident that I'll be well-prepared. is a very good guide which distills the ITIL concepts for an easy read and get a bigger picture. Apart from Foundation exam this should really be part of your guide collection if you are an IT professional(particularly). of Service Online Learning program to obtain my ITIL Expert certification and I achieved a 100% first-time pass-rate. My experience with them is entirely positive over 6 courses (Lifecycle track). Their programs are excellent and helpful their staff are knowledgeable and responsive. The professionalism is at the top of the industry and Ivanka is truly one of the visionaries in the industry. Did I get what I wanted? Absolutely. They under-promise and over-deliver. I found it an cost-effective way to obtain certification while continuing to work at my day job.

    I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you your company and taking your training. I also appreciate all of the support you gave me during my journey over the last year to complete my college degree and achieve my ITIL Expert Certification.

    Expert!?! Sure am!

    Having done a previous course with the Art Of Service I was already confident with not only the courses but also the back up they provide. So I decided to try the MALC course online with them as well. Passed the course within two weeks studying weekends and some nights. They have included exercises exams and of course content which guided me through the entire course whilst continuing to work long hours.

    Thanks again to the crew at the Art Of Service I was able to gain my Expert qualification in the very restrictive times that I have to study and saved myself a bundle from the classes I have previously attended.

    The Art of Service is leading me throught the ITIL Expert Pathway. I just completed the Planning Protection and Optimization Intermediate course and scored 100% on my exam. The courses are well worth the investment.
